The lion is a large cat of the genus Panthera, native to Africa and India. It has a muscular, broad-chested body; a short, rounded head; round ears; and a hairy tuft at the end of its tail. It is sexually dimorphic; adult male lions are larger than females and have a prominent mane
In order to become the leader of the pack, lions must win a duel. The larger their mane, the more respect they are shown by their rival. But not only does it look breath-taking it also protects the animals from serious injuries on their heads and necks.
Fun fact
The lion's mane begins growing at one year of age.
